INT. HOTEL. (MID-SCENE. SAM'S FINAL BREAK.)

They are mid-conversation in the hotel lobby when he starts to hear voices (à la early radio announcers1) and the first notes of a song2 start to play. Time seems to slow. Sam turns, trying to identify the source of the music, and the world slows around him. The lobby falls away, turning into a hallway instead (possibly the hallway in which the body was found). His partner is the only one who notices Sam turning away and has the time to react before the world stops/changes completely. (The camera starts on Sam's back and moves the opposite direction as he turns, he serves as the pivoting point from which everything shifts.)
JOSHUA
(the words long in his mouth)
—Sam? You alright?

By the time Josh finishes speaking, he's fallen out of frame and therefore out of Sam's dream. The lobby has changed completely into the hotel hallway. It's empty except for Sam, and seems unnaturally long. At the very end, he can discern a jukebox, presumably the source of the music. Slowly, he walks down the hall towards it, his footsteps both light and heavy, like he's walking through molasses (like he's walking through a dream).

1 similar to the vibe of the avalanches' "frontier psychiatrist."

2 santo & johnny, "sleepwalk." sam's main motif throughout the series, only ever heard in part or severely distorted until this point.
